Presenting the gospel of Jesus Christ to all people.

Migrant Ministry

 Singing during VBS

Every summer in June many migrant workers come to St. Helena Island to pick the large tomato crop from several farms across the island and surrounding areas. The majority of the workers are from Mexico but another percentage come from many parts of Latin America including Honduras, El Salvador, Dominican Republic, Panama and Haiti. It was the desire of a woman named Drucilla ‘Dru’ Graves to have an outreach for the migrant worker families while they were working in the area. She contacted Pastor Mario Vargas, a Hispanic missionary serving across the state and he agreed to come each summer to run the migrant worker vacation bible school. Members of churches across Beaufort county volunteer for this two week period to assist Pastor Mario and his wife Sylvia with this outreach. From the committee that helps coordinate the churches involved, local Hispanic pastors help by preaching, choirs come to sing, musicians play nightly, food preparers and servers, van drivers, translators, bible class teachers, and more. Pastor Mario explains the gospel.
All Nations has been involved in the migrant ministry VBS for several years. Our first two years we helped put out the clothing for the attendees to select from, then we heard there was help needed with the children’s classes. We were already involved with Child Evangelism Fellowship and decided to use the summer curriculum for the children’s classes of the Migrant VBS. Some of our teens attended the Christian Youth in Action summer missionary training and we began teaching the children during VBS. From that point on it has been our pleasure to serve the children who attend the Migrant VBS and their families.
We often get to know children who return year after year and their parents. We host a get together for the children at the home of Pastor and Mrs. Jones. Over the years there have been cookouts, pizza parties, game nights and ice cream socials for the children and teens who can attend. Some of the children and youth have made decisions to know Jesus as Savior. It is our prayer that they will grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
